Scratched Crews

Crew Scratchings.

Crew scratchings are a fact of life for the competition organiser. Recording these is desirable to ensure that results are properly recorded and to aid informing opposition, especially in side-by-side racing.

The Entries -> Scratchings menu entry shows the currently recorded list of scratchings. Note that this is not a shared list with BROE and the two need synchronising at various points in the competition lifecycle. We have plans to introduce a specific automated BROE synchronisation step but this is currently not implemented. The BROE crew import operations will pull in scratchings but it is advisable to review any additional changes manually to ensure that no other conflicting changes have been made.

Head Race Scratchings

In the head race scenario marking a crew as scratched updates the draw reports to show that the crew is scratched. Scratching does not however have an effect on the results reports. We take the view that a Did Not Start verdict is perfectly fine on the results and it ensures that crews are not hidden if they actually take part in the race.

Scratched crews are however suppressed by default from the BROE results upload spreadsheet file. This is due to a feature of BROE where any scratched, in BROE, crews that are listed in the upload are marked as unscratched when the results are finalised.

Regatta Scratchings

Scratchings at a regatta are a more complex affair because the draw is affected by any scratchings. At the moment Oar-Online treats the scratched marking as being separate from the effect on the draw.

There are at least the following scenarios:

  • Two lane straight first round - in this case the opposition needs informing of the scratching and that crew may get passed through to the next round or may be required to row over the course for a bye.

The administrator must ensure that crews/officials are notified of any change to the start-order. The results/start-line sections (to document) are properly updated to reflect the changed structure.

  • The scratched crew has a bye - in this case the opposition will likely depend on the result of an earlier round so it isn't trivial to ensure that the opposition are notified. Again the results/start-line sections need to be properly updated to reflect the competition decisions.

  • A crew scratches after the first round. In this case it is suggested that the crew itself is not marked as scratched but the result for the crew in the race that it withdrew from is marked as scratched. This will then be given the appropriate classification when the BROE results upload is produced

  • In a multi-lane race a number of different scenarios are possible. The race may take place with the scratched crew being absent at the start or the draw may be adjusted to account for the changes.
