PDA Timing Overview
PDA Race Timing
The timing system operates with Android tablets based at both start and finish locations. As each crew crosses the line the time is recorded by pressing the button corresponding to the crew number. These times are stored in a timing log for each division and are uploaded to the central timing computer. If an internet connection is available the times are uploaded immediately or they can be uploaded later if there are internet connection issues on the tablet PDA.
Usually we operate multiple PDAs at each location to allow automated consistency checking of the recorded times. In addition we also operate a stopwatch/paper based record and ideally a video record to provide a backup in case of queries.
For each division the operations can be split down as follows: * Timing setup - synchronising PDA times and identifying the competition meeting/timing division in operation. * Time collection - as crews cross the line their times are recorded. * Timing closedown - stop recording times on each PDA and transfer any deferred timing records if an internet connection was not available during timing. * Overall Audit - Record checking, correction and penalty application.
During the division, assuming PDAs have an internet connection, the status of the timing can be watched on the web console in realtime. In particular it is useful to monitor which crews are on course and how many crews are still to complete the course.
