At a regatta Ranking Index Points are normally awarded solely within a single event. But some competitions choose to split the event across divisions and indeed use separate events instead-of/as-well-as banding within an event. Event Hierarchies exist to allow the competition to link events together for the purposes of awarding points.

The highest ranking event is chosen as a parent event and then one or more child events are linked to it forming a hierarchy. Then when points are being calculated for the competition the lowest event in the hierarchy and its bands will be awarded points as normal. The next highest in the hierarchy will then be awarded points as though the event and its bands are on top of the first. This continues up the hierarchy until the parent event which gets the most points of all.
